Our Story

Greengate Ranch & Vineyard has a history dating back to the 1800’s as a dairy farm, but is best known for its rise to international acclaim under the ownership of Jay and Dorothy Stream, who occupied the ranch from the 1950’s until 2012. The Streams bred world class Arabian horses after turning this majestic piece of land into a top notch horse facility. Jay Stream was a Past President of the International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA), inspired the Arabian Horse Society and was President Emeritus of the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO), having served as President for 31 years. His international recognition popularized the ranch as it became home to world class Arabian events and extravagant galas and auctions attended by celebrities, royalty and luminaries from the Middle East who traveled half way across the globe to visit Greengate Ranch.

Jay Stream has since passed away and Dorothy Stream has moved to Arizona. The property and all of its facilities had fallen on hard times and were in need of a substantial restoration project. A local business man purchased the property in July of 2012 and immediately went to work restoring the grounds and structures to their previous grandeur.

The barn structures were in need of immediate attention as one had partially collapsed. Both barns have been restored from top to bottom, while maintaining their historic design and charm.  The events barn stands strong once more with its original wood facing.

The front pastures, which have historically been irrigated horse pastures, had become overgrown with six-foot high weeds and thistle. They’ve now been cleared and re-seeded. Greengate had been a horse training, breeding and boarding facility for decades, but most of the arenas on the property had been removed or become obsolete. To preserve the history of the one then existing arena, the area has recently been turned into our guest Pool Arena, including a pool and spa, bocce ball court, fire pit, and BBQ area.  The original white arena siding remains as the pool perimeter.

Since July 2012, Greengate Ranch has been in a state of many improvements and projects carrying out the current owners vision to create a property that is a world class destination for vacation retreats, corporate functions, weddings and lifestyle events. In April of 2013, 70 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards were planted on the surrounding green lands of the property, new pasture fencing and irrigation lines were installed and a new world-class horse training arenas were built.

The two original homes on Greengate Ranch have been completely taken down to the bare bones and renovated with the modern amenities and design, to become beautiful vacation rentals, offering our guest an authentic California Ranch & Vineyard experience in luxurious California casual accommodations. The Ranch House is a sprawling 6,000 square foot home sitting on the highest part of the ranch with 360 degree views including the vineyards and the Seven Sisters mountain range. The Carriage House is a three bedroom two bath home with great room. In August of 2016, a third home was built.  The Vineyard Cottage is a spacious and serene three bedroom three bathroom that overlooks the rolling vineyards below.

With vast improvements and consistent maintenance of our vintage Barn & Courtyard area, Greengate has become one of the Central Coast’s premier destination wedding and corporate event venues. With a team tasked with the goal of creating a memorable experience for all of our guests, we aim to provide welcoming customer service and customized offerings to fit the needs and vision of all who visit.

The Vines at Greengate Ranch & Vineyard were planted in April of 2013.  With our new planting in 2016, we now grow a total 88 acres of Premium Winegrapes.  With the help of expert agriculturist, George Donati, General Manager of Pacific Vineyard, we have five clones of Pinot Noir, two clones of Chardonnay and a single clone of Pinot Gris.  Pacific Vineyard specializes in developing and managing vineyard properties in the Edna Valley. George is also a licensed California Farm Labor Contractor, as well as a member of the California Farm Bureau and various other grower organizations. The Edna Valley appellation has a global reputation for producing premium wine grapes, and our goal is to produce top notch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes that are made into award-winning wines.
