Wedding Stories

Amanda + Reed

"We first met across an arts and crafts table throwing markers and construction paper at each other in 2nd grade. Although the art class was amazing, sparks didn't start flying until 15 years later.  After remaining friends through high school and college (Reed at Cal Poly, and me at UCSB), we both ended up heading down to Southern California for work, at which point the inevitable happened......we started dating.

We both love the Central Coast for the sense of calm we get while we’re there, and the amazing memories we made together in SLO.  We'd always head up to SLO for a weekend here and there when we wanted to escape from work. Naturally, when looking for wedding venues we knew that we wanted to be in the Central Coast, and Greengate stood out right away.  I grew up riding horses, so driving up the road and seeing horses grazing in the field had me sold right away.  More importantly, we really wanted a property where we could stay the weekend with our bridal party and enjoy spending time with each other and relaxing, rather than worry about traveling from venue to venue. Another priority for us was variety; we didn’t want to choose a single location for the pictures, ceremony, and reception. Greengate is such a unique property that we were able to take amazing pictures in the stables and the Ranch House, had our ceremony on a peninsula at the pond, took pictures in the vineyard, and then had our reception in the barn with lawn games outside. We hit five different locations but the whole day felt easy and unrushed because it was all on the same property.

Our favorite part of the wedding was running all over the property with our amazing photographer and being able to see our friends and family having a great time.  The day after the wedding we immediately wanted to have the same wedding again!"

Ashley + Douglas

Douglas and I have known each other for years!  We first met in middle school, I was in sixth grade and Douglas in seventh.  We were two of the tallest kids in school, so it was very easy to find one another.  From there, we attended the same high school, where I got to watch Doug be a rockstar at basketball and baseball and he came out to support me at our water polo games.  After a year at the same junior college, we both went our separate ways to complete our degrees but ultimately ended up back in our hometown.

Each year, we make it a priority to spend about a week in Tahoe each winter with a group of friends.  Last winter, due to everyone's busy schedules, Doug and I ended up going to Tahoe alone for the weekend.  We spent the day riding the gondola and wandering the lake before dinner.  Douglas made a point of saying "Let's take a picture by the water before we go!"  So I stood by the water, waiting as he fiddled with the camera and finally he ran down to take the picture with me.  Camera snapped, I started to walk back to the sidewalk when he caught my hand, spun me around, and got down on one knee!  It was an amazing setting, beautiful moment, and I was instantly in tears!  We made quick phone calls to our parents and headed off to dinner to celebrate.

We knew that we wanted to get married on the Central Coast, it was always such a relaxing place for us to visit.  We wanted to be able to share that amazing setting with our family and friends.  We were fortunate to have Greengate recommended to us from one of the trainers that we had contacted by accident.  The moment we turned into the driveway we knew it was the place for us!  The long sweeping driveway lined with trees, the beautiful barn and the Ranch house that overlooked it all was just amazing.

One of our main priorities in planning our wedding was to have our whole bridal party together.  Everyone was traveling from different places and we wanted to really be able to spend time with them and for them to have an opportunity to relax once they got there.  Being able to have the property for the whole weekend did just that!  Everyone arrived early Friday afternoon, which allowed us to grab lunch and relax before the rehearsal.  The best part of the property was being able to spend all of Friday evening with our bridal party and family members in the Ranch house playing games and enjoying each other's company before the big day.  There was no rush the next morning, everyone was already there which really made the day stress free!  It is definitely something we would not have been able to achieve if we were worried about traveling to different locations.

Our favorite part of the wedding was our first look with one another.  Our amazing photographer, Cameron Ingalls, picked out the perfect spot right outside the Ranch house.  The scenery was gorgeous and created the perfect moment.  We were able to spend a few special moments together with one another taking it all in while hummingbirds flew all around.  It was truly our storybook wedding!

Lauren + Jared

Jared and I met in high school and began dating our Senior year.  After high school we both attended Cal Poly together, where we fell in love with the area.  After college, I went off to law school and Jared joined the Army becoming an EOD technician and serving in Afghanistan.  We continued to grow together through our long distance relationship, and just about nine years after we started dating, Jared proposed.

We always wanted to get married in the SLO area, and when we saw Greengate Ranch & Vineyard, we knew it was the perfect place for us.  It was unbelievably beautiful, the staff were wonderful and it could fit all of our family and friends.  We loved being able to rent the property for the entire weekend, which made it easy for our large families to be together and truly enjoy the wedding.  Jared and I wanted to showcase the natural beauty of the Ranch and Edna Valley.  The Greengate staff was wonderful in helping us shape our vision and make it so that we did not have to worry about any detail the day of our wedding.  The day turned out perfect for our family, friends and us, and we feel blessed to have been able to start the next chapter our lives together at such an amazing place.

Jennifer + Ryan

Ryan and I have known each other for years – we initially met way back in middle school through mutual friends. We both grew up in SLO County – I went to Paso high and he went to Atascadero, but we didn’t start dating until after high school. We both attended Cuesta and then Cal Poly. After graduation, we moved across the country to the Midwest. We knew we wanted to get back to California (and have our wedding there too!) and when the opportunity arose to move back, we took it.

From the beginning, there were two things we wanted: our wedding to be back home and a venue big enough to accommodate all of our friends and family. A barn setting gave us plenty of space for our guests, dancing and vendors, but still provided an intimate (and beautifully rustic) setting for our wedding. We had looked at several locations in the area, but none of them seemed to fit exactly what we were looking for – until we viewed Greengate. It was love at first sight – the Narnia of wedding venues, if you will. It had all the facets of what we were looking for – gorgeous views (that literally looked like they were out of a Disney storybook) and an amazing barn (probably the most gorgeous barn we’ve seen yet). The major plus was the Carriage House – we were hoping that we’d get a venue that provided a spot for overnight stay – an area for us all to have snacks, get ready the day of and have brunch the day after. Having the Carriage House made the perfect little area for our entire wedding party to feel like they were on a vacation retreat for the weekend too. And, to top it off, the weather was gorgeous and perfect, and the location was incredibly easy for our guests to find.

The day of, our guests loved the venue. We had received so many compliments on how amazing this property was. Ryan and I are so grateful that we were able to celebrate our big day with all of the people that we love in such a beautiful place.

Julie + Curtis

My husband and I met while attending Cal poly. While we no longer have the pleasure of living there, we take every excuse to visit and knew immediately that we wanted to return for our wedding day. What better place to bring our friends and family to celebrate! We wanted a venue that would showcase all that we love about the area…the coastal climate & gorgeous countryside in particular, and settled on Greengate Ranch tucked into the rolling hills of Edna Valley wine country. It was just perfect.

From the get-go, we let the inspiration of the venue lead the way. The ranch was already so gorgeous in its natural state that it lent us the freedom we needed to create our romantic countryside wonderland without worrying about matching every little detail. The renovation was still very much in progress during our months of planning, but the staff did a great job of addressing our concerns and keeping us updated. It got more and more beautiful each time we visited. Our overall goal was to create an atmosphere that was beautiful & romantic, yet warm & welcoming, and we loved the outcome.
